Patiala is a city in southeastern Punjab. The city is famous for its traditional turban (a type of headgear), paranda (a tasselled tag for braiding hair), patiala salwar (a type of female trousers), Slip-on leather footwear, known as the Patiala jutti and Patiala peg (a measure of liquor).
1)Moti Bagh Palace
It was built as one of the largest residences in the world and served as principal residence for Patiala royal family till late 40' when it shifted to New Motibagh Palace which acts as permanent residence to Maharaja of Patiala and his family. Moti Bagh Palace now houses the National Institute of Sports and Art Gallery that contains rare photographs, medals and kits of great Indian sportsmen.
2)Qila Mubarak Complex
It stands on a 10-acre ground in the heart of the city. It was the principal residence of the Patiala royals until the construction of Old Moti Bagh Palace.The entrance is through an imposing gate. The architectural style of the palace is a synthesis of late Mughal and Rajasthani.
3)Rang Mahal and Sheesh Mahal
The two mahals contain a large number of frescoes. Sheesh Mahal is a magnificent palace completely ornate with mirrors and glasses. Both of these Mahal have amazing architectural view and a must visit if you are in Patiala.
4)Lachman Jhoola
Across the Lake in front of Sheesh Mahal there is a magnificent suspension bridge which is a replica of the famous Lakshman Jhoola at Rishikesh. It was built to link Sheesh Mahal with the Banasar Ghar on the other side of the lake.
5)Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib
This Gurdwara is said to have been visited by Guru Teg Bahadur(ninth guru).The site where Guru Tegh Bahadur had sat came to be known as Dukh Nivaran, literally meaning eradicator of suffering. There is a legend, that anyone who prays at this Gurudwara will be relieved of his sufferings.
6)Bahadurgarh Fort
The Fort is 6 kilometres away from Patiala city. It is situated on the Patiala-Chandigarh road. The construction of the entire fort was completed in eight years. A sum of ten lakh rupees was spent on its construction. It covers an area of 2 km2. The fort is enclosed within two rounded walls and a moat.
7)Qila Androon
Also called the Inner fort. It consists of the Sheesh Mahal, Toshakhana, Jalau Khana, Chand Mahal, Rang Mahal, Treasury and Prison. Ten of the rooms are painted with frescoes, or decorated intricately with mirror and gilt.
8)Kali Temple
It is located on Mall Road and is a popular religious destination for Hindus. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was so inspired to build this temple, that he brought a 6-ft statue of Kali from Bengal to Patiala. A much older temple of Raj Rajeshwari is also situated in the center of this complex.
9)Gurdwara Moti Bagh Sahib
It is situated in the Patiala City. One of the Gurudwaras in Patiala which is frequently visited by tourists.
10)Baradari Gardens
It is in the north of old Patiala city, just outside Sheranwala Gate. It was built as a royal residence with a cricket stadium, a skating rink and a small palace set in its heart named Rajindera Kothi. Rajindra Kothi located in the Baradari Gardens is now a heritage hotel.
