Thane is also known as 'the city of lakes' as there are around 30 beautiful lakes. The name Thane comes from corruption of its ancient name Shri Sthanak in Maharashtri Prakrit language, its earlier name based on a temple of Ganesha.
1) Masunda Lake (Talao Pali)
This lake is surrounded by roads on all sides.The lake is located about 600 m west of Thane creek and a kilometer north of Thane railway station. This is one of the recreational areas for people who live in Thane which offers boating and water scooter facilities.
2) Thane Creek
It has been formed due to seismic fault lying below it which runs from Uran to Thane. It is a prominent bird conservation site in India which is managed by the Indian Bird Conversation Department. In particular, it harbors populations of flamingos and several other migratory and wading birds.
3) Upvan Lake
It is famous for hosting the Upvan Arts Festival. There is a beautiful lord Ganesha's temple at Upvan lake. The hills provide a serene landscape to the lake. However, the rise in the number of high rise buildings have slowly reduced this. The official residence of the Mayor of Thane Municipal Corporation lies adjacent to the lake.
4) Tikuji-Ni-Wadi
It is an amusement park, water park, and a resort. The Water Park has pools and water slides. The amusement park includes go-karts, roller coasters, giant wheels and a 7-story zip-line and many more. Additionally, there is a Shiva temple and marriage halls as a part of the resort.
5) Mumbra Devi
It is one of the famous temple in the district of Thane(Mumbra). The goddess temple is situated at the peak of the hill.During the 17th century Mumbra was small village of Koli and Agri (fishermen tribes). Mumbra Devi is the prime deity of Koli and Agri tribes. It is situated on Parsik Hill, at a height of 210 meters appx above sea level.
6) Kopineshwar Mandir
It is among the most revered patron temples in Thane city & is a must visit for any devotee/ tourist coming to Thane.The principal deity temple of Shiva has a 5 feet diameter by 5 feet tall Shiva Linga. Within the holy enclosure of the Kopineshwar temple are six small temple shrines dedicated to Brahma Dev, Rama, Maruti, Shitala Devi (Thatakai), Uttareshwar (Kashi Viswalingeswar) and Kalika Devi.
7) Suraj Water Park
It is also known as the Pride of Maharashtra after having bagged 6 Time’s winner in Limca Book of Records and winner of National & International awards. Created by Muchhala Magic Land Pvt. Ltd., Suraj Water Park is an excellent water recreation paradise which appeals to people belonging to all age groups.
8) Yeoor
It is known for its panthers and wildlife and is popularly known as "Mumbai's National Park". An Indian Air Force station is also located in the area. Access to the area is tightly controlled by the Forest Department, and no vehicles are permitted to enter after 20:00 hours.The clean atmosphere are the main attractions of these hills, and have converted it into a perfect tourist spot.
9) Sunni Shafi Jama Masjid
It is one of the famous mosque in the district of Thane(Kalwa). It comprises a huge building located in Mohagir Guftar. Urus is held on the 10th of December every year, which marks the death anniversary of some saint and this pulls a large crowd who visit this centre to seek blessings.
10) Ghodbunder Fort
It was built by the Portuguese, occupied by the Maratha Empire, and became the East India Company's district headquarters. The place was called as Ghodbunder because in was where the Portuguese used to trade for ghode (horses) with the Arabs. Hence the name Ghodbunder: ghode (horses) & bunder (port).
